Leslie Ferris (Leadership and Marketing Coordinator for the New Mexico Career Technical Leadership Project

This month, Executive Council Officers Angel Pina and Alexa Chavez are highlighting Ms. Leslie Ferris, a dedicated BPA alum whose journey shows the lasting impact of leadership, service, and passion. From serving as a National Officer to mentoring new generations of members, Leslie continues to embody the true spirit of BPA. Learn more about her story and how BPA has shaped her path!

  1. During which years were you an active member of BPA?
I was a secondary member from 1997–2001. From 2001–2002, I served as the secondary national secretary, and I’ve been an active alumni member since 2002.

  2. What was your most memorable moment or achievement during your time in BPA, and why does it stand out to you?
Serving as an officer for both Texas and national BPA was an incredible experience. It gave me the chance to meet members from all over the country and build friendships that have lasted for years. It’s amazing to see how many of those people have gone on to shape their own state associations and continue giving back to BPA. After graduation, I’ve loved working with the passionate leaders from New Mexico. Watching them grow—especially those who’ve gone on to run for and serve in national office—has been one of my proudest achievements. Seeing their success fills my heart with BPA pride!

  3. Can you share your current profession and how your experience with BPA helped shape your career path?
I currently serve as the leadership and marketing coordinator for the New Mexico Career Technical Leadership Project (CTLP). My job lets me share my love for BPA and other CTSOs by training student leaders across New Mexico. I also organize events like Fall Leadership Rallies, CTSO Day at the Roundhouse, and our State Leadership Conferences. I still stay closely connected to BPA as the New Mexico BPA state officer advisor, and it’s one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

  4. In what ways did your involvement in BPA prepare you for the future? Are there specific skills or experiences that have proven especially valuable?
BPA taught me the importance of servant leadership—putting others first and leading with purpose. I learned that from two amazing mentors, Mrs. Kay Franklin and Mrs. Sherrell Wheeler, who reminded us that BPA should always be student-led and member-focused. My chapter advisor, Mrs. Sue Neff, also taught me to work hard and chase my dreams, no matter how big they seemed. Those lessons about dedication and believing in yourself have helped me in every part of life and work.

  5. How do you continue to stay connected with BPA, and how has your involvement evolved since graduating?
Since graduating, I’ve stayed active as an alumni member in many ways. I helped train Texas state officers, became a teacher and advisor, and even judged at national competitions (sometimes alongside my mom!). In 2016, I became the New Mexico BPA state officer coordinator, which eventually led to my current CTLP role. Every step of the way, BPA has remained a big part of my life.

  6. What advice or words of wisdom would you offer to current BPA members looking to make the most of their experience and plan for their futures?
Have fun and enjoy every moment! Don’t get so focused on competition or titles that you miss out on making memories and friendships. BPA is about growing—as a professional and as a person. Take every chance to serve others, whether that’s helping a teammate or mentoring younger members. That’s where real leadership happens. Most of all, cherish your experiences, because the lessons and friendships you make through BPA will stay with you long after you graduate.
